Woodwork is where quality shows

Walls are what you notice first, but woodwork is what tells you a job's been done properly. Drips on skirting boards, brush marks on doors, painted-shut sash windows and gloss that's yellowed or cracking all give a room or a frontage a tired look. We give woodwork the time it deserves – sanding back, filling, priming and building up the finish coats so the result is smooth, even and durable.

Sash window painting

Epsom's Victorian and Edwardian houses – particularly around the town centre and the older parts of Ewell – often still have their original timber sash windows. They're worth looking after. When we paint sash windows we:

  • Ease painted-shut sashes so they open and close again
  • Rake out cracked and loose putty and re-putty where needed
  • Cut out small areas of rot and repair with two-part resin filler
  • Sand, knot and prime bare timber
  • Paint the sashes, frames and sills in a quality exterior finish, keeping paint off the cords and runners so the windows still slide freely

Where windows need more than redecoration – new sash cords, draught-proofing or joinery repairs beyond what filler can fix – we'll tell you honestly and can recommend a specialist.

Front doors

A freshly painted front door is one of the quickest ways to lift the look of a house. We take doors back to a sound surface, fill and sand any damage, then apply primer, undercoat and top coats for a deep, glossy or satin finish. Many customers use the opportunity to choose a heritage colour to suit the period of their home.

Staircases, spindles, skirtings and doors

Inside, we paint and refinish staircases, banisters, spindles, skirting boards, architraves and internal doors. If you're tired of yellowing oil-based gloss we can switch you to modern water-based satinwood or eggshell, which stays white and dries quickly.

What's included

  • Sanding and de-nibbing between coats
  • Cracks, dents and open joints filled
  • Bare timber knotted and primed

Woodwork and window painting prices

Woodwork is priced on the amount and condition of the timber. As a guide, refinishing a front door (both sides) typically costs £200–£400, and painting a full set of interior skirtings, architraves and doors in an average room £150–£350. Sash windows are priced per window after a survey, because the repair work can vary a lot. See our price guide.

FAQs

Can you paint sash windows so they still open?

Yes. We ease the sashes before and after painting and keep paint off the cords, pulleys and runners so the windows still slide freely.

Should I use water-based or oil-based paint on woodwork?

Modern water-based satinwood and eggshell paints don't yellow and dry quickly, so they're our usual choice indoors. Oil-based finishes are still sometimes preferred for exterior doors and windows – we'll recommend what suits your timber.

Can you repair rotten window sills?

Small to moderate areas of rot can be cut out and rebuilt with a two-part resin repair system before painting. Badly decayed sills may need a joiner to replace the timber.

How long does it take to paint a front door?

Usually one to two days, allowing for preparation and drying time between coats. We'll make sure the door is secure and lockable at the end of each day.
