The foundation of a good finish

Fresh paint shows up every imperfection on a wall – especially under modern spotlights and daylight from big windows. Before we decorate, we make good the surfaces so that the finished room looks smooth and even. For many Epsom homes this is the part of the job that makes the biggest difference.

Repairs we carry out

  • Settlement and hairline cracks – raked out, filled with flexible or setting fillers and sanded flush
  • Holes and dents – from picture hooks, wall fixings, TV brackets and old shelving
  • Nail pops and failed tape joints in plasterboard ceilings and walls
  • Blown or loose plaster – small areas cut back and patched
  • Patch skimming of damaged sections after removing wallpaper, tiles or fittings
  • Making good around new sockets, switches, pipes and spotlights after electrical or plumbing work
  • Cracked coving and ceiling roses repaired or reattached

Old plaster needs the right approach

Older Epsom houses often have lime plaster on lath, which behaves differently from modern gypsum. It can move with the building and needs to breathe, so filling it with the wrong materials or sealing it under a non-breathable paint can cause problems later. We'll identify what your walls are made of and use compatible repair materials and paints.

When it's a job for a plasterer

We handle the repairs and patching that are part of preparing for decoration. Where a whole wall or ceiling needs re-skimming or replastering, we'll tell you straight away – and we can coordinate a trusted plasterer and then decorate once the new plaster has dried out.

What's included

  • Cracks raked out and filled
  • Holes from fixings and brackets repaired
  • Nail pops and tape joints fixed
  • Small areas of blown plaster patched
  • Making good after electricians and plumbers
  • Fine surface filling and sanding
  • Breathable repair materials for older walls
  • Mist coat and decoration once dry

Plaster repair prices

Most plaster repairs are included as part of a decorating quote rather than priced separately, because the amount of making good varies so much from room to room. If you just need repairs doing – for example after an electrician has chased in new cables – we'll give you a fixed price after seeing the job.

FAQs

Why do cracks come back after decorating?

Cracks that are only painted over, or filled with a rigid filler where the building moves slightly, often reappear. We rake them out, use the right flexible or setting filler for the situation, and on stubborn ceiling cracks can use reinforcing tape.

Do you do full replastering?

We focus on repairs and patching as part of decorating. For whole walls or ceilings that need re-skimming, we can bring in a trusted plasterer and then decorate once it's dried out.

How long does new plaster need to dry before painting?

Fresh skim coats typically need around a week or more to dry, depending on thickness, temperature and ventilation. It should be an even light colour with no dark patches before we apply the mist coat.

Can you make good after an electrician?

Yes. We regularly fill and patch chases and holes after rewires and new sockets, then repaint so the work disappears.
