Wallpaper hung properly, first time

Wallpaper is less forgiving than paint. Walls that aren't flat, joints that aren't sealed or a first drop that isn't hung truly vertical will all show, and expensive papers don't leave much room for error. We treat paperhanging as a skilled job in its own right: walls are prepared and sized, the first drop is plumbed with a laser, patterns are matched carefully round corners and seams are rolled down tight.

Papers we hang

  • Traditional paste-the-paper wallpapers
  • Paste-the-wall and non-woven papers
  • Heavy vinyls and textured papers for hallways and busy areas
  • Designer and hand-printed papers – including brands like Morris & Co., Cole & Son and Sanderson
  • Large-scale murals and panoramic panels
  • Lining paper to smooth uneven walls before painting or papering

Stripping old wallpaper

Plenty of Epsom homes still have layers of old paper under the paint – sometimes several decades' worth. We remove it with steam and scrapers, taking care not to gouge the plaster, then wash down the paste residue, fill any damage and sand flat. If the plaster underneath is in poor shape, we'll talk you through options such as lining paper or patch repairs before anything new goes up.

Getting quantities right

Always check with us before you buy paper. Pattern repeats, room height and how the drops fall around windows and chimney breasts all affect how many rolls you need – and buying everything from the same batch matters for colour consistency. We'll measure up at the quote visit and tell you exactly how many rolls to order.

Wallpapering costs in Epsom

As a guide, hanging a single feature wall usually costs £200–£450, and papering a full average-sized room £450–£900, plus the cost of the paper. Stripping old wallpaper typically adds £150–£350 per room depending on how many layers there are and the condition of the plaster underneath. Designer and mural papers take longer to hang and are priced accordingly. See the price guide for more.

FAQs

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

It depends on the room size, the height of the walls and the pattern repeat. Large repeats can need several extra rolls. We measure up at the free visit and give you an exact number so you can order everything from the same batch.

Can you hang wallpaper over painted walls?

Usually, yes – as long as the paint is sound and the wall is smooth. Glossy or sheen paints may need a key and a sizing coat so the paste grips properly.

Do you supply the wallpaper?

Most customers choose and buy their own paper so they get exactly what they want, and we advise on quantities. We're also happy to source it for you.

Should I use lining paper?

Lining paper is worth it on older or uneven walls, under thin or expensive papers, and where plaster has been patched. It gives a smoother base and a better-looking finish.
